Identifying the maker of your European antique clock

Finding a name or trademark image on a clock may simplify the task of identifying the maker and the approximate date the clock was made.  Then again, it may provide you with misleading information.
For instance, an original paper label may have been taken from a clock (perhaps one in poor condition) and affixed inside another in an attempt to make the second clock seem more valuable or to lend an air of authenticity. Reproductions of old labels are also available for purchase from a number of sources.
A reputable dealer will tell a buyer if a label is a reproduction. But the dealer himself may not know (or investigate too closely), and there are, of course, some sellers who deliberately attempt to mislead buyers.
However, a movement signed by one maker may have been placed in a case made by another - a practice usually termed a "marriage." A clock case made in one century might even have a movement made fifty or a hundred years later.    Below is a sampling of some of the most common clock makers marks you may come across.

  1. Many years ago we ourchased a grandfather clock in Montevideo, Uruguay. The face has Spandneburg and Frecerro, which I have identified as a clock retailer from the late 1800's who are still in business as Freccero. Upon closer inspection, the clockworks are AGUL...it says this on the chime housing. This clock is in very good condition, but when I put the pendulum on it it does not maintain its momentum. It is a wind up clock, when I take the pendulum off, it ticks until it,s unwound. Any ideas

  7. I have a clock movement with a trademark emblem of a crown with MANN. on the crown. The movement has some unique adjustable pivots and I would like to learn more about the maker and vintage of the clock. Any direction or guidance would be appreciated.

  11. Hi
I am wondering where I can go to try and identify a makers mark? I simply cannot find it on any website.
The clcok case is brass but I don't think the movement
belongs with it. The movement only has a monogram but I have no idea what it says. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. To me it looks like an M with maybe an A behind it?

    Regards

    David

  14. I recently purchased a cuckoo clock that has a Trademark M.KELLER VILINGEN, It is complete with count wheel type (regula)SBS technick movement. The carvings on the front of the case and the top crown are syrocco wood. The weights are of a rare pine cone shape I have never seen before. I found one reference to the trademark on a website in russian. It must be a rare bird? On the inside it's got the number 259 to match the back cover to the case seems they were only making small qty's
